After The Wedding - Name Changes

So much time and planning goes into the wedding that often the tasks after the ceremony can seem daunting or may very well be forgotten. One of those tasks is the changing of your name. It is an old tradition for a woman to take on her husband’s last name. These days, men may also take the woman’s name, or they may both make the decision to hyphenate. Regardless of which of these is chosen, there are necessary steps to make the name change official.

You may want to order extra certified copies of your marriage certificate, because some agencies may require original documents before allowing you to change your name.

Request a new Social Security card reflecting the name change. Contact your local Social Security office for instructions, or call the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213 for instructions and the necessary forms to complete the name change.

You will need to also change your state license and ID, so contacting the department of motor vehicles is necessary, as well. Make an appointment and ask in advance which documents you’ll need to bring with you to certify the name change.

If you have a passport, you will need to complete a Passport Amendment/Validation Application to obtain a new passport with your name change.

Other considerations that you’ll need to think about are replacements for checks, business cards and credit cards. Also, employers need to know of your name change, and schools if you are a student. Car registration, insurances, banks, mortgage companies, the post office, utility companies, and voter registration organizations are others to consider notifying. Many of these places will need to update their records with your new name.

A great way to notify friends and family would be to send thank-you cards with your new name printed on them, or consider purchasing stationary with your new name. A card or letter with the new name helps announce the new name as well as letting people know you are now married.

One special consideration - if you are a man changing your name after marriage, check the marriage certificate to see if there is a place to indicate a name change. If not, you may need court papers to legally change your name.

Be sure to check the rules in your state for the order of places that you need to contact. In some states, you need to contact the DMV first, and in others, the Social Security Administration. Each state varies, so you will need to do a bit of research for the correct protocol.
