Wedding Videography is a Snap with Photography

If you’re somewhat familiar with the wedding industry, it’s no surprise that
wedding photographers and videographers have a love/hate relationship.
Depending on which side of the fence you’re on, ego and business are the biggest
factors in a successful relationship. Having grown up with my father who is
a veteran photographer I’ve seen the workings of the photography business
and how it relates to shooting video.

So what’s my opinion? Neither is better. Different? Yes.
First of all, a great wedding video incorporates a compelling and entertaining story.
After all, this is why they hired you. Pictures are a very powerful tool for a professionally
edited video. Let me explain …

Recently, I shot a wonderful bridal shower for a client. Instead of just editing raw
footage and slapping down a layer of music I went the extra mile. During the event,
I recorded interviews of her immediate family and friends. I knew this would come in
handy for post production. Once I had captured the footage and imported her
photographs into Final Cut Pro it was time to get to work. I layered down a nice
bed of music that established the mood without overpowering my primary audio
- the interview. Care must be taken that your musical selection does not overlap with
the frequency range of your subjects or your final mix will sound muddy.

As the intro began, I faded in music with a nice selection of establishing shots.
As I cut into the first interview I stacked a nice layer of photographs that followed
what my subject was talking about. This creates a free flowing edit and adds power to her
words and feeling to her thoughts. And most importantly, the edit becomes seamless to
the viewer.

This approach is often seen in documentaries and is an established form of
filmmaking. Now, I could’ve cut to b-roll footage. However, for the
sake of weddings there is something more magical and emotional when your
looking at a great photograph. For the videographer, photographs are a great tool
to add to your editing and production arsenal.
