Your Cake: Keep It For A Year
Your Cake: Keep It For A Year
In one of my recent posts, I talked about wedding cake traditions and how it the cake is sometimes used for the christening of the first child or the first anniversary of the couple. Though to be honest, I have not heard of many people doing this, you might want to try it for yourself. Of course, the biggest concern with this tradition is the fact that the cake is biodegradable and in all probability will turn sour before a year is up. So how do you store your cake so that it will keep for a year?
The first thing that you must do is take out the cake topper - now that does not need delicate storage. Just make sure you store it in a safe place. Other decorations on the cake, especially those made of icing and sugar can be left on the cake.
Next, turn your attention to the base or the board where the cake is placed. If it is made of cardboard, check if it is covered with aluminum foil. If so, let it be. if not, then transfer the cake onto a plastic plate or a cardboard base covered with aluminum foil. This is a precaution against your cake smelling and tasting like a cardboard box a year later.
You should then place your cake in the freezer for an hour. This is done just so that the icing will be very hard - this is in preparation for the wrapping later on. After you have ensured that the icing is frozen, take some cling wrap (any brand will do) and start wrapping your cake. Make sure that you do this from top to bottom, covering the whole surface of the cake. Furthermore, ensure that the wrapping is airtight. Now you understand why the cake had to be frozen first.
After the layer of cling wrap, add another layer of aluminum foil. This further protects your cake from other tastes as well as freezer burn. The last protection would be a container to hold the entire cake for a year. Make sure it can be placed in the freezer. Then place the container inside the freezer - preferably in the back where it will not be moved around too much throughout the year.
That’s it! Now all you have to do is to wait till your anniversary comes up and voila, you have your wedding cake to celebrate your special year.
